If everybody already knew how to control acne then obviously nobody would have it, but that isn’t the case. People who know how to control acne realize that getting rid of those unsightly pimples is a step by step process. It’s always best to start off with the basics and see what happens before you invest in expensive products, ask for a prescription or try any kind of surgical or medical procedure.

Change Your Ways

Anybody who knows how to control acne will tell you it all starts with what you eat. A diet comprising of whole fresh foods that are antioxidant rich and plenty of water helps to keep pimples under control. A diet full of sugar, fat, caffeine and alcohol will make your skin look awful. People who know how to control acne eat right and avoid nicotine, drugs and alcohol. They exercise regularly and make sure they get enough rest.

Skin Hygiene and Hydration

People who squeeze their pimples or forget to use cleanser and moisturizer do not know how to control acne. If you want to get rid of acne you should keep your hands away from your face whenever possible so that you don’t get bacteria in your pores. You may also wish to consider using a gentle cleanser that does not exfoliate your skin and a good quality oil-free moisturizer twice a day.

Look Around Your Kitchen

If you know how to control acne then you will already be aware that there are lots of helpful products in the majority of household kitchens. Natural acne control products include garlic, lemon juice, fresh tomato juice, honey, green tea and oatmeal. Products such as green tea extract and tee tree oil are also helpful. You can use all of these products topically to get rid of acne pimples in an inexpensive way that will not cause any unwanted side effects.

Over The Counter

If you have followed all of the above steps and your acne pimples still haven’t gone away then perhaps it is time to try and over the counter acne product. There are hundreds of different products to choose from but most of them contain the same basic ingredients. The ingredients commonly found in these acne products are benzoyl peroxide, salicyclic acid, sulphur and alcohol. Many of these ingredients cause excessive dryness and skin flaking so if you try them make sure that you moisturize your skin regularly.

Prescription Medications

Certain individuals who know how to control acne and have taken all of the right steps to help themselves may still need to ask their doctor for a prescription if they have a particularly severe problem. Prescription acne medications generally include antibiotics and topical ointments that contain more benzoyl peroxide than over the counter products. Sometimes oral contraceptive pills are prescribed to females of reproductive age who have acne.

Medical And Surgical Procedures

If you can afford it you may wish to consider having a chemical peel to get rid of your acne. A chemical peel removes the top layer of skin where the acne is. Laser treatment is another surgical option for people with acne. With laser treatment the skin of the affected area is vaporized to encourage healthy new skin cells and collagen to grow underneath. These procedures may be effective in the short term but they are also rather expensive. Such temporary measures are not as effective as knowing how to control acne through diet, lifestyle and good skin hygiene.
