It’s not just teenagers who get acne. Adults get acne, too, mostly in those adults with combination or oily skin types. The advantage of oily skin is that you won’t get premature wrinkles. The disadvantage is getting pimples. Teenagers aren’t the only ones worried about zits, which is why there is a big line of adult acne products on the market. Some entire adult acne product systems have been developed that cost hundreds of dollars.
They Don’t Work
Most adult acne products are a waste of money. You’d be much better off buying healthier food or going to your doctor for acne control advice. But if adult acne products ultimately don’t work, why are they selling and why is there such a big demand for them? It’s because of the placebo effect.
There is a very strong link between what we believe and how healthy we are. If we believe that a brand new and expensive adult acne product is going to clear up our acne – surprise, surprise – it does (for a while, at least). Doctors and scientists have known about the placebo effect for hundreds of years. In a 2008 study, half of American doctors admitted that they gave placebos to their patients when they didn’t know how else to treat them.
Other Contributing Factors
If you’re worried about your appearance enough to invest in adult acne products, then chances are that you are worried about more than just your skin. You probably are worried about your weight or a bald spot or other signs that you are not as young as you used to be. You’re starting to feel those aches and pains more and know you need to do something about them.
It is theorized that one of the reasons adult acne products seem to work is that the purchaser is going into a whole health regimen, including regular exercise, a better diet and maybe even seeing the doctor. It’s actually the diet and exercise changes that it clearing up the skin – not necessarily the adult acne products.
If you have common acne (acne vulgaris) that is unsightly but painless, then it’s up to you whether to talk to your doctor about it. But if your acne is painful, has nodules that never seem to burst and makes your skin itchy, sore and red, then please see your doctor. You may need prescription medications and ointments. Your doctor may also advise you to see a dermatologist.
